3rd Graders Reading with Partners

Our students are reading a lot and enjoying it! We read from our text books, of course, but we also encourage the children to read for enjoyment both at school and at home. To do this, each child has a number of "good fit books". These are books with that are challenging enough to keep them interested, but not so hard as to discourage their growing reading skills. The children have time each day to read to themselves quietly as well as to listen to a story read aloud to them.
As much as possible, we also try to give them time to read with their friends. This is called partner reading. From time to time, we all get together as a 3rd grade and read with each other. The expectations during this time are that we use soft voices, we read the whole time, we take turns reading, we check with our partners for understanding before moving on, our eyes are looking at the words whether we are listening or reading, and we are good listeners as well.
This can be done at home as well whether it is reading with another adult, an older sibling, or even reading to a family pet! It is all very beneficial. Enjoy the read!
